Founded in 2005, Bata ng Calabnugan, Inc. (BNC) works in Sibulan, Dumaguete City and the surrounding areas of Negros Island in the Philippines, providing care and protection to orphaned and at-risk children. Its Family Home, which opened its doors in Calabnugan in 2010, offers children a safe and nurturing environment where they can receive education, medical care, social support and the opportunity to grow in a stable community.
Over the years, Bata ng Calabnugan has continued to strengthen its commitment to child protection. Alongside residential care, the organization has developed expertise in adoption and alternative child care, recognizing that every child deserves the opportunity to grow up in an environment where they can feel loved, protected and supported.
Adoption as a journey, not simply a placement
Since 2019, Bata ng Calabnugan has expanded its work to include adoption services. This has brought a new dimension to its commitment to children and families: helping create safe and lasting connections while ensuring that the best interests of each child remain at the heart of every decision.
For BNC, adoption is not simply about matching a child with a family. It is a careful and structured journey that requires listening, assessment, preparation and ongoing support.
From the initial documentation and assessment to the matching process, first meetings and preparation for the child’s transition into a new family, each step is designed to build a positive and sustainable relationship. Support does not necessarily end when a child joins a family: monitoring and follow-up are also an important part of the process.
This approach reflects Bata ng Calabnugan’s broader commitment to ensuring that children are not only protected, but also given the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships and a sense of belonging.
A major milestone: Full Certification
This commitment has recently reached an important milestone. Bata ng Calabnugan has obtained Full Certification for its Adoption and Alternative Child Care program, recognizing the organization’s work and the quality of the services provided by its team.
The certification represents much more than an administrative achievement. It is the result of the daily work of the people who care for the children, the professionals involved in the process and everyone who contributes to creating safe and appropriate pathways for children in need of family-based care.
It is also an important step forward for Bata ng Calabnugan as it continues to develop its role in child protection and alternative care in the Philippines.
Making adoption more inclusive
Despite the progress made, important challenges remain.
Some children face greater difficulties in finding an adoptive family. This can be the case for older children, children with special needs or groups of siblings who should ideally be given the opportunity to remain together.
For Bata ng Calabnugan, these situations underline the need for greater awareness and a more inclusive culture of adoption – one that recognizes that every child has their own story, needs and potential.

A partnership supporting children in the Philippines
Bata ng Calabnugan’s work is strengthened by its long-standing partnership with the Italian non-profit organization Isla ng Bata, founded in Rome in 2004.
Through this partnership, BNC has been able to develop and sustain its work in the Philippines, while Isla ng Bata supports the project from Italy through awareness-raising, fundraising and other forms of solidarity. The two organizations share a common commitment to protecting children’s rights and creating opportunities for children who have experienced vulnerability and difficult circumstances.
At the same time, the work carried out every day at the Family Home is rooted in the local community and is managed by Bata ng Calabnugan’s staff and local collaborators.
